CarFest Sustainability & Waste Management Policy

You MUST use the correct bins for recycling and waste, anyone found not using the correct bins will be fined. If you are unclear on which bin to place items in, place collectively in a separate bag for collection back of house.

ALWAYS check the labels on the bins.

Waste MUST be kept separated into the following waste streams:

  • Cardboard

  • Cans/Metal

  • Glass

  • Food Waste

  • General Waste

  • Cooking Oil

  • Wood/Timber

Cardboard

Cardboard boxes and large amounts of cardboard must be flattened and put into the back of house sacks or taken to the main onsite cardboard recycling skips.

DO NOT put cardboard into the 1100L wheelie bins or mix with General Waste.

Cans/Metal

Cans, food tins, aluminium foil and metals must be bagged separately in clear bags for collection back of house.

DO NOT put cans/metal into the 1100L wheelie bins or mix with General Waste.

Glass

There will be bins marked Glass Only.

All glass must be put into either a designated glass bin or skip. DO NOT put glass into the 1100L wheelie bins or mix with general waste.

DO NOT put any of the following items in the recycling bins;

  • Food waste

  • Anything contaminated with food (e.g. paper plates, bowls, cups)

  • Batteries

  • Ceramics

  • Electrical goods

  • Cellophane and plastic wrapping

  • Plastic and paper cups

  • Wood

  • Fuels

  • Ash or charcoal (use the metal bins provided)

  • PPE

Food Waste

This includes peelings, scraps, unwanted/unsold cooked food..

DO NOT put any major bulk food waste e.g. animal carcasses into any of the bins. Contact Production for a special collection if required.

DO NOT put cooking oil in ANY of the large or small wheelie bins.

DO NOT put rubber gloves, tin foil or blue roll into the food waste bins - these must ALL go into General Waste.

General Waste

The GENERAL WASTE bins are for non-recyclable waste ONLY.  Please check the label on the bin. Waste you can put in these bins includes;

  • Contaminated paper/wipes/tissues

  • Plastic wrappers

  • Shrink wrap

  • Contaminated food packaging

  • Plastic containers

  • Polystyrene

DO NOT put used cooking oil in ANY of the bins or skips onsite.

Wood/Timber

ALL pallets and timber MUST be taken away by the concessions after the event.

DO NOT put used pallets or timber in ANY of the bins or skips on site.

Waste Collection

DO NOT put waste in the front of house bins in the mornings, prior to the event opening. Use the back of house bins provided. ALL bins will be labelled detailing what can go in them - always check the labels.

Flatten cardboard boxes down before putting into the recycling skips or sacks.

If you have any questions about which bin to use or require a specialist waste collection, please visit the Production Office or our onsite Waste Management contractor, Stewart’s Cleaning.

If the bins need emptying please visit the Production Office or contact Stewart’s Cleaning at the earliest opportunity.

Use only clear bin liners. Should you run out at any point, please visit the Production Office or contact Stewart’s Cleaning for supplies.

Paper Cup Scheme

CarFest are operating a Paper Cup Scheme at our main event bars. Any drinks that are served in a paper cup the price will include a 10p deposit. If the customer brings back the paper cup back to the nearest refund point they will get the 10p back!
This scheme is in place to promote sustainability by putting the cups through the correct waste channels, rather than them falling into general waste.

Traders & Caterers Sustainable Servewear Policy

CarFest has banned all single-use plastic items for serveware from the event and alternatives must be found.

  • If it looks like plastic it will be classed as plastic. Items made from PLA and other ‘bio-plastics’ that look like regular plastic are NOT acceptable. This type of material requires collecting and treating separately in special facilities and we do not have the capacity to do this.

  • All concessions must adhere to the serveware and packaging guidelines.

  • Sugar, salt & pepper and sauces MUST NOT be available in single sachets, use only refillable containers.

  • All traders must use the recycling and waste collection systems provided behind their stalls.

  • No plastic bags will be given out or sold at the event (reusable bags/bags for life or similar only).

Please note that failure to adhere to any of the above will affect applications to trade at future events.

We aim to reduce waste where possible and reuse as much as we can. Serveware is generally NOT recyclable due to being covered in food waste.  All serveware including cutlery, plates, meal boxes etc. must be one of the types shown below:

  • Reusable Cups and Serveware

  • Wooden cutlery – spoons, forks and knives

  • Paper plates, bowls, trays and boxes made from (in order of preference):

    • 100% recycled fibre

    • Uncoated paper & card (i.e. no plastic lining)

    • Compostable products (e.g. Vegware)

    • Wooden stirrers and paper straws

Banned serveware types:

  • No single-use plastic serveware

  • No PLA/bioplastic

  • No expanded polystyrene

  • No plastic cutlery or straws (including biodegradable plastics)

  • No single sachet servings of salt, pepper, sugar or sauces. Refillable containers only.

  • No single use plastic bags (reusable or paper bags only)
